Law Student Openings

Porter & Hedges employs law students from numerous schools throughout the country in its summer associate program. The firm is constantly on the lookout for the intellectually curious lawyer with a passion to be the best. Because the law students we recruit are sought after by the nations' finest law firms and legal departments, we are often asked, "Why Porter & Hedges?" Here's the answer:

Become a better lawyer sooner

As an associate at Porter & Hedges, you have a chance to become a fine lawyer early in your career. You certainly will get more experience in a shorter period of time than you would at many typical large law firms. This means your work will be more interesting (translation: as a young lawyer you will attend more hearings, take more depositions and close more deals).

We believe that these hands-on experiences are the ultimate lawyer training program.

Just ask any of our associates.

Work with the best

You will be working with some of the best, most outstanding lawyers in their respective fields. For example, Porter & Hedges' corporate practice was named by the American Lawyer Corporate Scorecard as one of the "Top 25" law firms in the country for underwriter's counsel in 2007.  Also in 2007, the firm's construction, banking and finance and bankruptcy/restructuring practice sections were ranked by Chambers USA, 70% of our partners have been named "Texas Super Lawyers" in surveys conducted by Texas Monthly and Law & Politics magazine, and 14 partners were named in the Best Lawyers in America.

During the past ten years, many of our litigation partners have been named by The National Law Journal as having won one of the most significant verdicts of the year nationwide.

You won't get lost in the crowd

Porter & Hedges' summer associate class usually consists of 5-10 law students. By contrast, several of our large firm competitors have classes of approximately 70 summer associates. As a summer associate at Porter & Hedges, you will get to know our newest lawyers and the most seasoned.

Enjoy the advantages of a mid-size firm with a big-time practice

When you come to work at Porter & Hedges, expect to sit across the negotiating table or the courtroom from your peers at the country's largest law firms. One big difference: you may find yourself as one of the lead lawyers on the deal or case.

Your daily work will include a focus on client strategy and the big picture, not just one piece of the puzzle.

We are large enough to sustain the infrastructure and support necessary for your practice. You will have topnotch legal assistants and secretarial staff to aid you in your work, along with the necessary IT and marketing staff to help your practice thrive.

What happens in a rising tide?

Porter & Hedges is strong and growing. We are growing not just for the sake of it, but because our clients are growing and we're gaining market share by winning over new clients. We believe that most clients still hire lawyers and not firms.
