Legal 500 Once Again Ranks Porter Hedges Among the Leading Bankruptcy and Construction Practices in the Country

Legal 500 has once again recognized Porter Hedges nationally as among the leading firms in its 2014 U.S. law firm rankings. The ranking recognized the firm’s construction and bankruptcy practices along with five attorneys in those areas including:

Finance: Corporate Restructuring (including bankruptcy) – John Higgins

Houston firm Porter Hedges LLP’s ‘excellent’ three-partner team is ‘very competitive in terms of value and quality of advice’.
John Higgins heads the practice and is leading advice to International Bank of Commerce as the secured creditor in the Chapter 11 cases of real estate companies Sapphire and Diamond Beach. The group has also recently undertaken work for the official committee of unsecured creditors in the ATP Oil & Gas case and Axys Capital Total Return Fund.”

Real Estate and Construction: Construction – David Peden, Kerry McMahon and Nick Simms

David Peden heads Porter Hedges LLP’s Houston-based eight-partner team, which acts for architects, subcontractors, engineers, and lenders. It is also retained by public authorities with respect to school building and renovation projects, although the majority of work is contentious and originates from the energy and infrastructure arenas. Nicholas Simms and
Kerry McMahon gained a favorable ruling for prime contractor KBR against a Kuwaiti subcontractor in an ICDR arbitration concerning a claim for idle labor at a US military base in Iraq. Other highlights included successfully negotiating construction contracts and financing for an $80m office tower and a $106m mixed-use redevelopment in Austin, Texas. The team also represented a joint venture of contractors in a multi-party delay case regarding an $80m levitating railroad bridge project over large water lines under the Intercostal Waterway.”
