Paralegal – Construction Litigation Section (Houston)


Porter Hedges is seeking an experienced Paralegal to support our Construction Litigation Section.  A successful candidate for this position must have experience assisting attorneys working on highly complex construction-related disputes and litigation, with an emphasis on energy and commercial facilities. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains general contact with the clients, court personnel, governmental representatives, vendors, staff, attorneys and other legal personnel under the supervision of the attorney.
  • Conducts investigations and statistical, documentary, and legal research.
  • Specific to the Construction Litigation Section: Searches and reviews real property records and records liens.
  • Drafts legal documents, correspondence, and pleadings for the attorney’s review.
  • Authors and signs correspondence, provided the paralegal status is clearly indicated and the correspondence does not contain independent legal opinions or legal advice.
  • Summarizes depositions, interrogatories, and testimony.
  • Establishes, updates, and maintains databases for organization of case documents.
  • Organizes documents, maintains files, and coordinates electronic discovery.
  • Attends depositions, court or administrative hearings, and trials with the attorney.
  • Operates Sanction (or other trial/exhibit presentation software) and e-discovery platforms and document management tools.
  • Prepares and inputs time and billing data and text regarding all work time expended on any client or firm tasks.


  • Four-year college degree is highly preferred, although a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of work experience is acceptable. Completion of a paralegal training program and achievement of the Certified Paralegal certification is also preferred.
  • Possesses at least two years of paralegal work experience, along with knowledge of terminology and procedures applicable to specific practice area of assigned legal personnel (i.e., a Paralegal in the Litigation Practice Group will need to be able to demonstrate a firm understanding of the litigation case lifecycle, electronic filing of pleadings, e-discovery, docket scheduling, and trial/exhibit presentation software).
  • Requires accurate typing skills, good grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of word processing techniques, technology in an electronic network systems environment, Microsoft Office Suite, and PDF software (ability to manipulate and edit PDFs using Acrobat, Nuance, etc.) is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of e-discovery platforms and processes and the ability to operate Sanction (or other trial/exhibit presentation software) is required.
  • Ability to analyze administrative records, accounting reports, and business statistics and develop reports and summaries regarding those sources. Specific to the Construction Litigation Section, the ability to search and review real property records and familiarity with and ability to record liens. 
  • Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates good organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, provide superior internal client service, and be comfortable delivering under pressure in a team focused environment.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under time constraints and pre-set deadlines in an accurate manner with consistent high production; requires minimal supervision; may work outside of normal business hours.
